Lately my life has been one big "I just don't know." I don't know anything anymore. Even the things I used to know for sure are shaking loose. It's leaving me in this weird state of nothiness- I don't know if I want to write or not so I just don't write, I don't know weather I can trust someone or not so I just don't talk to them, I don't know what I'm feeling so I just try not to feel. Obviously this isn't the solution, but somehow it's more complicated than just snapping out of it. I can't even begin to explain to myself why I'm acting this way.
On a lighter note, I'm reading the first Harry Potter book, which makes me the first in my family. Honestly I'm not quite understanding the controversy here. It doesn't seem much different from other fantasy books I've read- maybe my whole life I've just been reading things that a lot of Christians would find inapropriate. I just remembered that we already had a big discussion about the use of magic and good and evil in fantasy books on this blog, a long time ago. The whole genre of fantasy is pretty interesting, really. It's not very well respected in eleit litterary circles, is it? This is kind of a strange realization for me because I always thought it was universally acknowledged that the greatest works of all time were the big long works of fantasy and science fiction. When really those books are more appriciated by nerds and those who like to read just for the fun of it.
Which definantly puts me into one or both of those chatagories, because I can hardly ever make it through classics like Dickens or... well, whatever hip and modern author is buzzing around in university English classes these days. Wouldn't it be great to be all sophisticated and cultured like that? I'll spend the rest of my life dreaming about it, I'm sure.
Elizabeth has been going on this alternative-rock journey lately and I'm kind of getting taken along with her. I don't know how she finds these songs, it's so depressing watching your younger sister become several times cooler than you, haha! But awesome at the same time because conceptually, some of that coolness might rub off on you by association. :-P I've become so lazy about my music, though, I want to go on a big journey through all the different genras to get totally adicted again. Because music, when you find the right stuff, is so amazing.
And so are words. Writing calms me down so much.
Glad to hear you're finally reading Harry Potter! Haha..
ReplyDeletePeople can make things sound a lot worse than they actually are, too.
Lord of the Rings could be put into the same "controversial" category of Harry Potter if you really wanted it to.
I guess what a lot of people who find those kinds of stories controversial don't fully realize the intent of fantasy/science fiction. They aren't meant to change what you believe; they're not real. They're just windows into someone else's imagination. :)
New music is always great, too. I've been finding myself in the more underground alternative rock stuff in the past few months, actually.
I think its great to get away from the daily grind of the overplayed stuff on the radio every once in a while.
I don't know if you've seen this video, but its very well done.

I don't know you quite well enough to where I know what kind of music cheers you up, but it can be therapeutic sometimes to hear music that sounds like what you're feeling. For me, anyway. Too much soft or sad music can be depressing too, though.
These might just sound like empty words right now, but I do hope you feel better soon. :)
Lol man I wish mom would let me read the HP books. Funny thing is there are all these other books I've read (currently it's the Gatekeepers series) that are really awesome fantasy things like that and are probably up to par with Harry Potter, but the fact that she's heard witchcraft 'n the like is involved it's always been a hands down no from her. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteHm. Well I sure wish I had the ability to turn off all feeling =P
the smile when you tore me apart/you took my heart/deceived me right from the start/ you showed me dreams/ I wish they'd turn into real
ReplyDeleteyayyyy, I'm so glad you're reading them, finally. And if you like the first one, you can borrow the other ones from us. Also, each book gets better, and more mature. just fyi. Yeah, I totally agree, it's a lot like other fantasy that we read. I just don't get the big deal.
I think, Matt, that LOTR might be put into a different category because the whole story takes place in a alternate land, not magic in the real world. idk, I really don't have a problem with either of them.
yeah, Sarah, what you're saying ( obviously, I don't really know the whole story) seems to be a common thing that parents do, and really bugs me. I feel sorry for you. : P
lol thanks Bethany XD ah well I guess I'll just deal. When I've grown up and moved away I can see what they're like! heh, I remember my parents were like that with certain cartoons too... they'd never seen them before, but decided because in their opinion the characters looked weird that my brother and I shouldn't watch the shows o.0
ReplyDeleteaw well, that is certainly a parents prerogative to do that. Won't it be fun when we are parents?
ReplyDeleteHaha, Beth I <3 you.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of rock, Skillet's new album "Awake" is incredible!!!!! The song Awake and Alive is so awesome! I don't even have words to express how great it is! Their previous albums Comatose and Collide are excellent as well! All the rest of their albums are okay, but the newest are their best fo sho.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree about the fantasy and sci-fi controversy thing. I think that most of the stuff people notice and get worked up about are usually rather superficial things - that is, I don't particularly care whether you call the main character a witch, a vampire, or something else. So I agree that the genres of fantasy and sci-fi are not intrinsically evil, and that a lot of fantasy/sci-fi stories are totally harmless and fun, and nothing deeper is to be read into them. But I feel like a lot of really good fantasy and sci-fi stories do have a philosophical message behind them - and that is what's important to me. I am not saying 'don't read book you disagree with' - I do that all the time! Rather I want to be sure that I can identify what the philosophy behind a book is and whether or not I can agree with it. For me, the scariest books (or movies or TV shows, for that matter) are the ones where I think the author is trying to say something, but I don't know what it is, because then they may be influencing me in ways I don't realize.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, I think HP is harmless for most people, but I personally don't like the temptation to power aspect (by which I mean the suggestion that ordinary kids can wield powerful magic).
